Grotto Nights returns, this time at Mezzanine on Jessie Street. It's this Monday night, and it's free! Details below, lifted from sfgate.com's ePicks:
Grotto Nights: Driving Obsession (Mon 2/5) Drive Yourself Mad You may remember Grotto Nights as it began to outgrow its space at the S.F. Main Library in 2005. Or it may be a totally new concept to you. Either way, come check the literary/performance event out at its new roomier location at Mezzanine in SoMa as the free event, run by The Grotto -- a writing workspace founded in 1994 by authors Po Bronson, Ethan Canin and Ethan Watters -- returns in all its eclectic glory to bring us the finest in community-building entertainment. The first gathering at its new locale is a pointed look at America's fixation on autos and automobility and how it has shaped life as we know it. The evening consists of a variety of performances based on the driving theme, each presented by locally grown talents in the fields of literature, film and art. Highlights include a documentary made by a taxi driver in Baghdad, a lecture by Dr. Graham Fleming from Lawrence Berkeley Lab on fuels made from synthetic biology, a scene by Dan Hoyle from his one-man, funny-yet-challenging play "Tings Dey Happen," hard-hitting car-crash photos by Matt Jalbert, a reading about the unexpected perils of cheap gasoline by author Lisa Margonelli and a NASCAR-themed poem by the Bukowski-loving Bucky Sinister. It's first-come, first-served, and a large crowd is anticipated, so get there early. -- Lisa Zaffarese, SF Gate
